Working to a brief

Brief 1 –

What are you being asked to do ?

This brief asks for packaging design for Quaker oats aimed at young women.

How will the client judge the successful outcome of the brief?

The client wants the packaging/ outcome to appeal to young women who eat well yet love treats. The packaging should reinforce the health benefits/ goodness of the product.

What are the keywords?

Keywords in this brief are delicious, healthy, natural goodness.

Any other questions to ask client?

Any colour combinations which they have preference for? What flavours are available? What kind of packaging ie shape and size/ format is to be used?

Brief 2-

What are you being asked to do ?

This brief asks for a full exploration around the theme of connections whether through people events, movements etc and asks that a target market is defined.

How will the client judge the successful outcome of the brief?

The client wants an imaginative take on the theme and stresses that the theme is fully explored as broadly as possible limited only by the designers imagination. The important point is that the ‘connectedness’ is communicated to the viewer.

What are the keywords?

Keywords in this brief are dynamic, ever-changing, connections, links, journey, connectedness

Any other questions to ask client?

A lot ! A very open brief I found this one difficult to narrow down and had to read over it a few times. Questions would be what formats, where will it be used. That being said as the brief asks the designer to define their own market many of these questions may be set by the designer.

Brief 3 –

What are you being asked to do ?

This brief asks that the designer raises the awareness of underage drinking contributing to a campaign towards changing societys attitude towards alcohol. The specific campaign wants to be target young people aged 13 – 16 and use the campaign identity of ‘Why let drink decide’. The client is open to ideas about the best media/ format to use.

How will the client judge the successful outcome of the brief?

The client wants the campaign to raise awareness and be creative . I’m thinking that the success of the campaign would be perhaps measured by something like underage drinking statistics although many such campaign success might be hard to measure given that a tangible product is not being promoted.

What are the keywords?

Keywords in this brief are awareness, alcohol, happy and healthy, vulnerable, decide, effects of drinking

Any other questions to ask client?

How risky can the campaign be? A lighthearted approach or more serious. Would they have any preference over using real people in the campaign or characters or illustrations?

What brief would I chose?

Having looked at the briefs I think I would most like to tackle the Quaker Oats campaign. I prefer to design for more tangible products/ services as opposed to thinking about ideas about how to get more complex ideas across. That being said its probably because I find the latter more difficult and its something I hope to develop along the course.I quite like having quite specific briefs to keep me focused and I can imagine based on my experiences  in the past I would probably have loads of different ideas for the connectedness journey brief and might find it hard to narrow down what decision to take. I like the idea of trying to get across the healthy message in the Quaker campaign and would like to create something quite contemporary and fresh. In the past I think I have the tendency to over-complicate things and I think for the Quaker campaign something quite slick and fresh would be most appropriate and I think this would be a good exercise for me to focus on creating strong graphics. I also like how this brief has quite a prescribed target market and purpose.
